On Saturday September 13th at the regular general meeting of the Windsor Park Neighborhood Association we presented a letter drafted by the Austin AIA Mobility Committee urging TxDOT and the City to consider changes to the designs they had put forth regarding the side streets and feeders connecting and crossing the expanded 1-35 express way.
We called for a vote to add our names as signatories to the document with the following message accompanying message:
The WPNA strongly supports the recommendations outlined in the August 18, 2025, letter to TxDOT regarding the I-35 Capital Express Central project. We endorse the proposed improvements to frontage roads, boulevards, bridges, and the East Avenue Trail, including tree canopies, safe design speeds, and pedestrian-friendly features, as they align with Austin’s Vision Zero and equity goals.
We join as a signatory with the understanding that these enhanced street designs should apply to all segments of the I-35 Capital Express program, including the northern sections from 51st to 290. These areas currently lack safe pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure and would benefit significantly from the same safety standards, such as 30 mph design speeds, tree-lined shared-use paths, and the removal of slip lanes.
We urge TxDOT to ensure consistent, equitable application of these recommendations across the entire I-35 corridor to create a safe, accessible, and welcoming environment for all Austinites.
We opened the online voting on Saturday afternoon and will close the voting Monday Night. Current Members for whom we had valid email addresses were notified by email a week before and sent a copy of the ballot starting Saturday the 13th.
