Neighborhood Priorities

  • Keep neighborhood feeder patterns and vertical teams together. Feederpattern= where your child zones. Vertical team = collaborative grouping of schools that is supposed to be aligned with a feeder pattern. Ours is not.
Zone Windsor Park, University Hills, and Pecan Springs students to one consistent vertical team from elementary through high school.
  • Preserve neighborhood connections
Draw attendance boundaries by neighborhood to keep Windsor Park, University Hills, and Pecan Springs families together through each school level.
  • Reevaluate non-zoned schools for local access
Review Govalle/Winn Montessori so that the least amount of harm is done to these school communities. Putting Montessori at Govalle displaces that neighborhood school and truncates the momentum that has been made at Winn. Listen to those communities. Review Bertha Sadler Means and Gus Garcia so they serve nearby families in structured, accessible, and community-centered ways. Consider both repurposing and fully funding/endowing those schools.

Template Letter to AISD Trustees

Subject: Keep Our Neighborhood Schools Together

Dear Trustees and AISD Leadership,

As a [parent / neighbor / educator] and resident of [your neighborhood: Windsor Park / University Hills / Pecan Springs], I’m writing to urge Austin ISD to keep our neighborhood schools connected and accessible. Families in Northeast Austin want strong public schools that reflect the communities they serve—not fractured boundaries that divide us.

Please prioritize these three community recommendations in the current zoning and consolidation plans:

  1. Preserve Neighborhood Cohesion

Zone all of Windsor Park, University Hills, and Pecan Springs to a closer middle school, such as Marshall Middle School, to maintain community continuity.

Alternatively, consider Bertha Sadler Means as an all-gender middle school serving nearby neighborhoods.
  2. Fix Split Feeder Patterns/Vertical Teams

Adjust the LBJ and Northeast High School boundary line so that students in Windsor Park, Pecan Springs and University Hills are not split between two vertical teams.
  3. Reevaluate Non-Zoned Schools

Review and repurpose Govalle/Winn Montessori and Bertha Sadler Means so they serve nearby families in structured, accessible, and community-centered ways.

Neighborhood cohesion is the foundation of strong public schools. We ask AISD to align feeder patterns by neighborhood boundaries and keep families together from elementary through high school.

Thank you for your attention and for listening to the voices of East and Northeast Austin families.

With care,
