Administrators and teachers at Bertha Sadler Means Young Women’s Leadership Academy decided to build a rain garden to enhance the beauty of their courtyard this year. Robert Martinez from our neighborhood helped out, applying his engineering know-how to the design of the garden. They got a backhoe to dig out a recessed garden, and volunteers came over several weekends in May to plant native plants and lay mulch.

We hope to visit again in the fall once the plants have had a chance to get established and see the progress of the garden, which will not only make the courtyard more aesthetically pleasing, but also provide a boon to wildlife in Windsor Park.
