The garden has partnered with Keep Austin Beautiful as an official beautification site! This means we will have access to the Keep Austin Beautiful’s tool inventory, large volunteer database, and other support. To celebrate, we are kicking off this collaboration with an evening garden cleanup session! See details below and click here to sign up.
When? August 23rd, 5-7 PM
Where? 5801 Westminster Dr, Austin, TX 78723
What? We’ll be working to disassemble the existing fence around the garden. We’ll also be ripping out hackberry saplings and other trees with special tools provided by Keep Austin Beautiful and trimming back a jujube tree that is threatening to take over the entire garden! This brush will be broken down and set on the curb for city pick-up.
Why? The existing fence is damaged beyond repair and theft is a recurring issue. We need to take it down in order to build a better one. Because renting dumpsters is very expensive, we are focusing on accumulating all waste (including the fence remnants) into a junk pile to be hauled away all at once. The garden is also filled with many dead and dying trees plus invasive hackberry saplings tangled up in the damaged fence. These will need to be removed to make room for new shade trees and the new fence.
What to bring? Work gloves, close-toed shoes, sun protection, WATER (we will have a large cooler with water and iced tea but please bring your own also), and a wheelbarrow if you have it. The jujube tree has sharp thorns so consider long pants and sleeves.
Can’t make it? That’s okay! There will be other opportunities to volunteer in the future. If you have friends, family, or community members that you think would be interested, please feel free to forward this email!
