their partnership with the City of Austin and Austin Energy
Texas summers are getting hotter—and Austin neighborhoods are taking action. The Shade Alliance is an Austin-wide movement uniting North and East Austin Neighborhood Groups to cool our city from the ground up. In just three years, we’ve helped get 2,000 trees adopted and planted on neighborhood streets and front yards, creating natural shade that lowers ambient temperatures and beautifies our communities.
We’re growing together. Our coalition includes: West Pong Neighborhood Association, Pecan Springs-Springdale Hills Neighborhood Association, MLK Neighborhood Association, St. John’s Neighborhood Association, East Cesar Chavez Neighborhood Association, and more joining every month.

Whether you want to plant a free tree in your front yard, volunteer with neighbors, or bring The Shade Alliance to your community, Join Us today. Together, we’re proving that Austin neighborhoods can cool our city while building stronger connections.
We have identified a myriad of front yards as good candidates for this program in Windsor Park and beyond.
What you get:
- Two native or adapted drought-tolerant trees of your choice
- Tree planting and care instructions
- Help with planting if you need a hand and free mulch
How it works:
- Scan the QR code to order trees for home delivery by TreeFolks
- Join us at Austin EcoFest, Saturday, October 17, 10am–1pm at Bartholomew Park.
- Learn about tree planting and get free mulch for your tree
- Enjoy kids’ activities, free food, and music
- Meet local environmental groups
- Free trees (walk-ups): 11am–1pm (while supplies last)
Our ask:
- Plant away from structures and utilities for long-term health
- Water your trees every week for three years
- Plant trees 15 ft from the street to shade pavement
