At the January meeting of Windsor Park Neighborhood Association (WPNA), we opened a vote to members on whether to provide donations from the WPNA general fund to local schools PTAs.  To those folks who were not able to be at the January meeting in person and who were 2026 WPNA Members, we sent out emails to vote online.  The specifics of the funding are outlined below with the reasoning.

In short, the ballot measure passed overwhelmingly.

Here was the wording in the online ballot:

The WPNA Schools Committee supports providing funds to our neighborhood schools. We reviewed how donations could impact elementary, middle, and high schools, and discussed each school’s location and zoning. Our committee, which includes educators, parents, and long-time advocates for AISD schools in Northeast Austin, recommends donating the following amounts to the PTAs of the three elementary schools that Windsor Park residents are zoned to attend:

  • $500 to Blanton
  • $1,000 to Harris
  • $1,000 to Andrews

The following 5 points guided our decision:

  • Make the biggest impact by distributing fewer large donations (rather than many small donations spread out across too many schools).
  • Distribute the fund equitably using a school’s Title One status as the indicator for whether to give $500 or $1,000
  • Invest in our early childhood/early elementary schools because of the well-documented impact that investing in early childhood education has.
  • Follow historical support and spending patterns by WPNA in which we typically support schools clearly within our boundary or feeder pattern*
  • Build relationships at our schools and show both our schools and our neighbors that WPNA supports our public schools

We discussed a shared desire as a Schools Committee to expand the reach of our advocacy efforts to form a regional schools committee that included neighbors, advocates, and members of schools in University Hills and Pecan Springs. This will be part of the Schools Committee’s 2026 review of our mission, and may impact the way we give and how we advocate (expanding our impact and building cross-neighborhood relationships)

This is one example of the ways membership dues and donations are used to help our community.  Having a voice in how WPNA spends the donations that we collect is one of the privileges of being a member.  To share your voice. Sign up today so that you don’t miss the next vote.
