Leffingwell pushes for wildlife habitat certification
When you think of a wildlife habitat, you don't think of an entire
city. But that's exactly what Austin is trying to become.
Austin City Council member Lee Leffingwell announced Thursday he wants to make the city a certified Community Wildlife Habitat with the National Wildlife Federation.
Austin will be the largest city in the country and the first community in Texas to attempt certification. To qualify, 600 homes, six schools and 10 businesses, houses of worship or other locations must be certified. Twenty-two other U.S. cities are certified.
A site must provide the basic elements that enable wildlife to
flourish: food, water, cover and places to raise young to get
certified. Some of the things a homeowner can do to get certified include putting up a bird bath, bird feeder and planting dense shrubs.
Cities that achieve certified wildlife habitat status also have
sustainable gardens, conserve water, plant native plants, remove
invasive plants and harvest rainwater and use composting.
